Psalm 8: The Excellency of Christ

“O Jehovah our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:9)

Psalm 8 is an inspired praise on the excellency of Christ.  This psalm speaks of the Lord’s incarnation, human living, death, resurrection, ascension, the Body of Christ, His coming back, and His kingdom.  Psalm 8 shows that God’s purpose and plan for man to express Him with His image and to represent Him has never changed.  Even though the first man, Adam, failed to accomplish God’s purpose for man, a second man, Jesus, has come to fulfill God’s purpose.

  1. Our situations may not look excellent, but David had a different view! His view was that of Christ, the unique center of God’s work. When we see what David sees, we can’t help but express the same cry: “O Jehovah our Lord how excellent is your name in all the earth!” Our perfected praise is the praise that is not based on our situation or feelings, but on what He is and that He is.

  2. “He’s not after great people to rule over the earth – He’s made us babes and sucklings and He is perfecting our praise. It is these babes and sucklings praising the Lord that stop the avenger, defeat him and cause the Lord’s name to be excellent in all the earth. We need to be like the little children – of such is the kingdom of the heavens.”

Lord, make us the babes and sucklings that would praise you!

  3. It is nice to be a babe and suckling.

  4. “O Jehovah…Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings You have established strength” (Psalm 8:1-2). How precious that Jehovah (not we) establishes strength and that this strength is not strenuous effort or great ability but praising the Lord. Matthew 21:16: “You have perfected praise.”
